The picture was taken in 1972 just after they started demolishing
the Circle to create the new traffic light.

How many times did you drag the circle?

What are your memories of The Circle..?
Who can tell me what was in The Circle?
Do you have pictures we can post of the early Circle?

Kent Shaffer '74 said he remembers going around 44 times

Painting of the Hub Dinner and Circle by Randy Welborn

I loved growing up in Beaumont and cruising the circle was a wonderful part of that memory. Cruised in my first car, a '52 Ford Fairlane and later a 57' Ford Crown Victoria (White with red interior!). The radio was tuned ('natch!) to either KTRM or KRIC. Loved the Hub Diner and had many a chopped steak with cream gravy there. Loved Vic 'n' Al's. The circle led to College Street and to miniature golf -- two courses, both on Fourth Street, as I remember. Anyone remember the park on College? Was it called Playland Park? I remember cruising and listening to Jerry Boynton's "Club 990" on KTRM the night the Big Bopper, Richie Valens and Buddy Holly died. Also loved going to both Pig Stands and Shelton's drive-in on Magnolia Loved cruising Calder. I was an announcer at Channel Six on Calder and many a night a bunch of us from KFDM would walk to the Pig Stand. Here's a site with postcards of old Beaumont: http://txgenes.com/TxPostcards/Beaumont.html Also does anyone remember a dance hall for young people near the Circle? I think it across 11th from Baptist Hospital near what is now Gateway. About 1955 or 1956.
Thanks for the memories! Sam Havens http://www.samhavens.com

Unknown sender...........I remember cruising 11th Street with Dixie, Gail, Vickie, and Carla, in Dixie's '56 Chevy. (All c/o '68 except Carla -- she was the baby - c/o '69). We would hit the Pig Stand near the circle, then back down 11th to turn around at the other Pig Stand. The smell of Rainbow Bakery would often entice us to knock on the door and ask to buy fresh-baked bread. Sometimes we would each get a whole loaf, before it was sliced, for about a quarter. Amazing what we could eat back then without gaining a pound!

I remember the police chasing us off the Gateway Parking Lot, only to drive to the Pig #49 to see Shirley, the car-hop. From there we waited until someone wanted to race either on Major Drive, or the service road of IH-10. How many times did I drive 11th St????I understand that there is a special summeer night when everone comes back driving classic cars and dressing in retro.

My memories of the circle or not as good has others. Being A young and inexperienced driver, my girl friend Judy Grey at that time and I were headed for the Circle Drivein one Saturday night to see A Elvis movie. While going through the circle I had my first fender bender. I was the kid so naturaly I got the ticket. We were about an hour late to the movie and I had A crunched left door on my 63 Plymouth. Hey guys, how about the 11th. street car wash? I spent A lot of money their..

The Circle was only a way to get to one of the "Coffee Shops" (both Pig Stands) or Vic'n Al's. I do remember going to the Circle Drive-in, too. Lots of relationships were made or broken over those coffee shops!!

One Saturday night I put 88 laps on The Circle in my '50 Chevy.. Woulda made more but had a blowout.. I have an artist rendition of the famous (or is it infamous) Circle....

The guy I dated (Lynn Bourgeois) sorry he was from Forrest Park High School. He liked to drag the circle until my face turned 5 different shades. Brings back a lot of memories. Not only did we like the circle, all surrounding schools did as well..

Vic and Al's was the place for dates to go. It was the place to see and be seen, but it also had the best pizza in town. It was an Italian Restaurant (still is, I think) but all we ever had was pizza! (This is Class of 63 I'm talking about.).

I seem to remember a flagpole in the center of the circle. Lots of shrubs and flowers. Always used the circle to get to the Pigstand. We all hated the new (I10) freeway. We used the freshly built freeway for drag racing...

Sharon Karnes and I always went around the circle a few times but we didn,t go around it over and over. We just watched everyone else have a good time.

Getting to the circle was only half of it, the drag was the other half, comprised of all the restaurants, going to the Pig Stand on 11th to get a cherry Coke and maybe make out in the car, checking out everything and everybody until your curfew. I remember mine was way too early !!! I think at the time I never knew Beaumont went any further than Gibson's Discount on 11th right past the Circle, that was as far as we ever ventured..

I would spend all Saturday morning cleaning my 68 camero convertible just to ride up and down 11th street that night. Wish I had that car now. Still have a LUST FOR FAST CARS....

Unknown Greenie *S* says, I remember one night my friends and I drove around the circle backwards!! South Park, Class of '63. Vic and Al's had the best salad ever!!! Also, across the circle was the Hub Diner. I remember going to a "Kidnap Breakfast" there with South Park Baptist Church Sunday School Class.

In the 60's there was only flowers planted in the middle. He rememberd driving around and seeing tire tracks all the way across the thing. That was a big thing with us, to see who had driven over it.

Well I wasn't old enough to drive it, but I sure had lots of memories with my older brothers and sisters. They couldn't go out sometimes without taking there little sister along. I rode around with them many times and was told not to tell Momma. I didn't, I was having too much fun...Vic and Al's place was Patrizi's. I also remember the Happy Buddha across from Vic and Al's. Baptist Hospital still stands on one corner, across from the hospital when I was able to drive (no circle) a go-cart track was there. Met lots of boys!!! and if I can remember anything else I'll write some more..
