Hi -
I am signing this book on behalf of my mother-in-law, Dorothy DuBois Johnstone, and her sister, Elwyn DuBois Cribbs, graduates of the classes of 1935 and 1937, respectively. They attended a reunion luncheon today, May 12, 2004, and came home and asked me to "sign them up with the alumni association." I see your class rosters go back only as far as 1940, however. I know there were others from earlier classes in attendance as well. Any messages for them can be sent to this e-mail address and I will forward to them. Thanks for a great web site!

My mothers best friend was Violet Challie. They travelled by train and arrived in Galveston together on March 28, 1942 to get summer jobs and never left Galveston. My mother married Francis X Heinrich in 1948. Violet Challie married Thomas Adley in Galveston the same year.
They remained best friends over the years. Violet Challie Adley passed away about five years ago. My mother is still alive and is 91 now. She is in fairly good health but her vision and hearing is getting worse with each day.
My mother got a job with the U S Army Corps of Engineers in 1942 and worked for them until 1975. After retiring there she got a part time job for Galveston County Navigation District and retired there in 2002. In our family was my father (from Galveston), my mother, me, and my brother. My father and brother are deceased so it is me and my mother now. I am 60 and a 1968 graduate of Ball High in Galveston. During my three years at Ball High we always played Beaumont French for the first game of the football season. My mother very seldom ever attended high school football games but for the French games I would take her. I was a teenager with a driver's license and I took her to those games. By the way we beat French all three years I was at Ball High.
My mothers postal mail address is 2308 51st St Galveston, TX 77551. Her home phone number is 409 744 8566. She does not know how to use a computer so all emails will have to be through me. I am a bit worried about her health so I hope someone from your organization can call her or visit her sometime. She was thrilled to know that I had found your internet page and was hoping for contact from someone. If you cannot reach her by phone then my cell phone number is 409 996 7307. I live in La Marque TX just up the road before Galveston. Before Hurricane Ike my family and I lived in Gilchrist, Tx on Bolivar Peninsula and we went to Beaumont quite often. About five years ago I drove my mother to her old neighborhood and she started crying because it was a ghetto and looked really bad. She lived on Grand Ave and thinks the address was 3150 Grand. I did drive her out there and it was depressing to see her old home look like that.
So please keep me and my mother in the loop and correspond with us as often as possible.
Sincerely,
Paul Ray Heinrich - yarluap@gmail.com -- Ball High School Class of 1968

Very interesting history....you missed Coach Pickle and wife who taught Spanish..and even now it impresses me...Mr. Hilburn was principal when I left..but he did correct me for saying "what the devil" when I could not grasp an algebra problem.....and good memories of French...BUT we had no dress code...and I wonder what would have been if I had not worked 40 t0 50 hours a week at 30cens hr. then missed six weeks only to have Mrs. Lester tell me to come in and take finals.......and if the war had forced us out..and my four years gave me a lot of education later...NOW our country forgets how "great" we were not...thank goodness...
You have spent a lot of time compiling this...
By the way was it Pickle or Pickell???he led French to several regional titles..football/basketball..with Chargois/Phillips/and others....and I broke my leg as a soph but was never that good...so I worked.....

I also taught mathematics at FHS from September 1951 through May 1969. From August 1969 through August 1989, I was Director of Data Processing Services at Region V Education Service Center in Beaumont. While at Region V I worked with Administrators and Counselors in schools over a six county area, including French High. I retired in 1989 with 40 years service which included two years in the United States Marine Corps in 1946-1948. My wife Pat and I have three children (Judy, Karl & Jeff)that all graduated from FHS. We also have nine grandchildren. I really enjoyed my years as a teacher at French, and it is good to hear about the success that many of my students have enjoyed.

I am currently the Mayor of Rose City, Texas. I am the proud grandmother of 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. My favorite teacher was Mrs. Hugh Lester. She taught me freshman, junior and senior English. I like to fish and garden. I am going to try and get more people from the Class of '45 to sign the guest book.
